Grant awarded to Audino
We are delighted to announce that a grant has been awarded to Audino. Audino is an open-source tool (GitHub) used for audio and speech annotation. The program was developed to help with translation services in rural India, where a multitude of different languages and dialects are spoken, which has contributed to lack of proper healthcare for many communities. It can be estimated that the use of proper translation technology could positively impact millions of people.
The National Health Mission in India aims to provide equitable access to affordable and quality health care services across India. Part of the problem is the diversity of spoken languages which results in an inability to communicate and comprehend important information
The National Health Mission is appointing Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA’s) to represent villages and rural areas. ASHA’s act as a communication point between rural villages and the wider healthcare system. At present the main problem they face is effective translation between many differing regional dialects. Accurate communication with local hospitals is imperative to providing effective healthcare services. In the majority of cases villages and hospitals are separated by hundreds of miles and speak entirely different languages/dialect

Audino is a tool that presents audio tagging tasks to a Worker who speaks a given language, such as Tamil, and then asks them to segment a sentence and label words correlating to the segment. The screen below gives an idea of the kind of user interface that could be presented to a Worker.
Audino is collecting these data sets to build a chatbot.
In the age of easily-available translation services, it is easy to assume that every language and dialect in the world has a translation service available. They do not. We are delighted to offer a grant to a new tool that can help build effective translation services to groups in need of it. Audino will be using the grant to integrate with the Routing Protocol as an Exchange Oracle.
