Newconomics 2023 - Meet our Speakers: David Chapman
Have you booked your spot at Newconomics? Good. Then you will have a treat coming to you in the form of some really experienced and interesting speakers who will be discussing the future of economics via web3. One of these voices is David Chapman, Principal at Silvermine Capital and founder of TeddyDAO.org the NFT for good project where people can make a difference where they want to in more targeted and direct ways. David shared his thoughts with us about web3 tech possibilities and how to promote the good projects among the scams.
“Web3 enables a shift away from traditional centralised internet platforms and services, and it promotes decentralised technologies which enable trust, transparency, and control over digital assets and interactions. For me a big area is user ownership of data and digital assets. It aims to empower us with more control over our online identities and digital property, allowing us to access and share data securely and more transparently.
I think the opportunities are endless, it has the potential to disrupt most industries, some of which people won't even realise. But whether privately or publicly, I imagine the majority of industries to be running on blockchain within the next 20 years.
There’s a great deal of misunderstanding about blockchain technologies. I think NFTs in their current form are viewed as just JPEGs on chain, but the potential for them to reach beyond that is limitless. And it can be applied to so many industries! If you think of cryptocurrencies are trying to disrupt finance, NFTs can disrupt everything else.
Having a greater understanding of blockchain tech means you can surge forward in terms of innovation. The biggest barrier I think is fear, fear of losing money, fear of the unknown. The onboarding process is not at a place yet where the average person in the street can get comfortable, there are some great attempts to abstract it away. Most people would be scared of having their money on a decentralised wallet with the risk of sending it to the wrong place or losing their key, this needs to become much more natural before we see mass adoption. That is why I think NFTs have the chance to get more mainstream first in things as simple and familiar as contracts or house deeds.
I think we have a great opportunity with Teddy DAO to onboard traditional donors and the average person as we give them the ability to onboard into crypto without the risk of financial loss or speculation, we are simply asking them to redirect their donation through the platform with the chance to win the daily Teddy NFT. As well as shining a positive light on the crypto industry for having a project that is doing good vs the endless headlines of scams we see published. So this is what really excites me.”
