Newconomics 2023 - Meet our Speakers: Richard Bassett

2 min read

Are you coming to the Newconomics event? Book your ticket now if you don’t want to miss some of the most informed and experienced speakers and panellists looking towards the future of web3 and global economics. Working in this field of course goes beyond the blockchain and military veteran and CEO of Mentor360, Richard ‘Bertie’ Bassett, shared his thoughts around leadership, tech and health.

Web3 Technologies: A Double-Edged Sword

“Web3 is a real opportunity for everyone to work in new ways. I’m always impressed by the innovation and creativity of people working with these frontier technologies. One thing that does concern me is that leaders in this space are often working without a safety net, support or familiar structures and this can be a strain on health and motivation

I launched the Mentor360 app because I want to get solid advice to people who need it. In my past I had not been a brilliant friend to people who were really suffering and as I worked in a macho environment, lots of people felt they were unable to share what they were going through. This led to some tragic events and I wanted to try to help however I could.

We have a simple version of the app and we’re working on using large language models that are overseen by people so that users can get good advice when they don’t have other people to talk to or are not ready to talk about the hard things in life. The app is not a replacement for an actual therapist, but a step along the way that can lead people to get the help that will make them stronger and feel much better.

At Newconomics you hear a lot of brilliant leaders talk about the freedoms and lack of restrictions that come with working on the blockchain. I think this is amazing, but I am also aware that when people make a switch from working in environments where they are supported, structured and sometimes restricted, they are heading into unfamiliar territory and this can be overwhelming.

Web3 is not a simple technology, it takes a lot to get to know it and work with it and there’s pressure to get it right when you rest your business on your decisions and of course any investment with that too. Pressure for leaders is a real issue and while web3 is really exciting, I hope that all those creative and impressive leaders we will have at the event are also surrounded by people or measures that give them the support they need.”

Find out more about the new economics of Web3 and how it can change the way we work together at the Newconomics event in Lisbon. Full details and registration can be found on the website.
