The Dark Side of AI #6: Zoom's AI Betrayal, AI's Lethal Cooking Suggestions, and the End of Password Privacy

2 min read

After a brief spell of good news, we're back with more bad news. Is Zoom spying on your calls? Do you want to try recipes from a killer chef? Is this the end of secure passwords? Let's find out together in The Dark Side of AI#6.

Zoom's AI Ambitions: At What Cost to User Confidentiality?

In our hyper-connected society, we're using more and more tools for video calls, and Zoom is one of them. This tool, which skyrocketed in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic, frequently rolls out new updates and changes its terms of use. That's exactly what happened on July 27th, with the addition of a condition stating that you authorize "Zoom to use data generated by the service". But what does that mean?

This non-negotiable condition allows the company to use the data generated by its service to help train its AI. Since audio and video make up the majority of the data on this type of service, many users have concluded that, in addition to spying on you, the company can now record and use your calls for its AI.

If you're starting to worry about what you might have said during a call, don't fret; the company has denied using this data. But would they admit to something as potentially serious as this? We'll leave that judgment to you, but we can only urge you to be cautious.

From Oreo Stir-Fry to Chlorine Cocktails: AI Cooking App Goes Haywire

For those of us who aren't great cooks, it's often hard to come up with ideas for what to make with the ingredients in the fridge. Thankfully, apps like Savey Meal from the New Zealand supermarket chain Pak 'n' Save are here to help. Well, when they're not trying to kill us!

While the AI was able to suggest recipes efficiently using leftovers, it then proposed some more original choices... Got some Oreos and veggies left? Perfect, you can whip up an "Oreo vegetable stir-fry".

It's a weird suggestion, but hey, to each their own. But users really started to worry when the AI suggested using chlorine gas and bleach in some “non-alcoholic cocktails”.

With recipes not being checked by humans, several "poisoned bread sandwiches", and other delights began to appear on the app.

Using a service like the HUMAN App to verify the data used by AI should become mandatory, as in this specific example, the consequences could have been dire!

AI's New Threat: Decoding Passwords Through Sounds of Your Keyboard

All roads lead to Zoom! Indeed, according to a recent study, all it takes is typing your password during a call with software like Zoom to compromise it!

And how is this possible? Because AI can determine the sound of the keys pressed on your keyboard with about 95% accuracy. Just retype the same keys, and voila, goodbye password. Researchers also warn about the video itself, stating that even subtle shoulder and wrist movements can reveal what you're typing...

Without descending into acute paranoia, we must be more careful than ever about how we communicate, our communication channels, and our behavior. It's a matter of the security of our data, and even our identity! Thankfully, AI isn't all bad, and good things are on the horizon.
