Hackathons: our path to decentralization

2 min read

HUMAN Protocol has always been a community-first project, from making all our work open-source, to community led NFT initiatives. Hackathons are a key part of the vision to empower the developer community to continue the work we have begun.

We plan for our hackathons to establish a developer community which – through curated Discord channels – can become a source of information, advice, and development for all projects looking to build with HUMAN.

Why hackathons?

We have had great success with Gitcoin work in the past. In fact, our Executive Director, Haryjot Singh, was hired after working on an open-source Gitcoin bounty.

HUMAN Protocol was established to allow for the management and control of distributed work. It makes sense, therefore, that we encourage and use that kind of distributed and outsourcing platforms to power our own technology. In time, we will actually use the HUMAN job launcher to launch, manage, and payout this development work.

Gitcoin work represents an opportunity to get excellent contributions from the community. But the vision is larger than that.

The developer community

The Foundation’s core development team remains hard at work on core protocol developments. But the work required to integrate the scope of use cases, grantees, and projects exceeds what could be accomplished by a small team.

The first aim of our hackathons is to receive contributions to enhance core functionalities, such as more integrations on more EVMs, and to improve the scope of Proof of HUMANity (hackathon work has already highlighted this!), to bring on more data-labeling tools, and more.

The second and complementary aim of our hackathons is to scout out the excellent contributors to HUMAN Protocol, and thereby create an engaged, knowledgeable developer community.

So, as the demands for HUMAN Protocol adoption and integration expand, there is a ready team of developers who are familiar with the Protocol – who have already completed essential work – and who can, therefore, develop for (or simply advise) anyone and everyone looking to build with HUMAN tech.

The developer community will then act as a trusted source of help for grantees, for example. For their work, the developers will continue to earn rewards at Gitcoin.
